SHEEO Member Webinar: SHEEO/IHEP Webinar on College Transparency Act

Date:

06/20/2023 to 06/20/2023

Location:

Virtual Event

Description:

SHEEO held a webinar with the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) on Tuesday, June 20, from 1-2 p.m. ET to discuss the College Transparency Act (CTA). This bipartisan, bicameral, federal legislation would modernize the federal government’s approach to data collection in higher education, providing accurate, comprehensive data on student enrollment, persistence, transfer, and completion. It would also help to promote better outcomes by aiding institutions and policymakers in their work to improve our postsecondary education system. The CTA advances these goals by creating a secure, privacy-protected, student-level data network, as well as a user-friendly website for students and parents.

SHEEO, along with dozens of other national organizations, has endorsed the legislation.

The webinar explored the following questions:

  • What are the shortcomings of our existing federal data infrastructure?
  • How can the CTA help answer key questions on student outcomes in higher education?
  • How would the CTA complement existing state-level data systems?
  • How can SHEEOs and state agency officials help advance this legislation?

Presenters:
Kelly Leon, vice president of communications and government affairs, IHEP
Diane Cheng, vice president of research and policy, IHEP
Jessica Vivar, government affairs associate, IHEP

Moderator:
Tom Harnisch, vice president for government relations, SHEEO
